Sport/economy mode gearbox switch.
 

Hi everyone,

I have a problem with my '88 560sec. The sport/economy mode switch on the gearbox moves but doesn't change modes. It is stuck in sport mode, which is fine for those quick starts from traffic lights, but doesn't help the smooth starts or fuel consumption - (at $4.50 a gallon in the UK it's bit of an issue).

I'm not sure where to start looking.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, does the sport mode only do the first gear start, or does it also delay changing gear untill you hit higher revs??

This is pulled from some old info from tech training.

As I remember this is a vacum controlled system, find the switchover valve, establish the presence of manifold vacum and the see if the valve both has power and ground when activated, if it does, check the bowden cable for leakage. There also is a version that is hydralic but, I've never figured out how that one works. :confused:

In S it will change up at higher revs too. Even foot flat to the floor, in E mode it'll change up at no more than 3500.

One more question........where is the Bowden Cable???

I have searched this site and founds loads of info about shifting problems where the possible cause might be the Bowden cable but no-one seems to have said where it is.

I do have the manual on CD, so if someone could point me to the right .pdf file I would be very grateful.

Well, after a bit of looking and a bit of common sense, I found the Bowden cable! I've have adjusted it so that the accelerator has to be pressed further before the bowden cable is pulled, and as if by magic, the car shifts much smoother! It's like a new car!

Another problem I was having was where the car would repeatedly surge at 1,500 rpm, and it felt like it wanted to change gear. This has also stopped!

Lastly, as mentioned in several other posts (which I found when trying to sort out my problems) was the car would not change up a gear unless I backed off on the accelerator. This has also been fixed!!!!!!!

I thought the "S" stands for standard drive where it goes 1-2-3-4 to be used in any situation, but especially where the road is undulating.The "E" stands for economy where it goes 2-3-4 and is more economical for flatter roads bypassing the 1st gear and also better on wet roads and winter roads to prevent undue wheel spinning when taking off.
