Instrument Cluster
 

I have a 1987 300 Turbo Diesel MBZ. The other morning when I turned on the car, the instrument cluster was dead. No oil pressure, no fuel gauge, no temperature, no tachometer. None of the above is working. The only device working is the speedometer. I checked all the fuses and their fine. Does anyone have any ideas about what else can be checked?

Try removing OR "rolling" fuse # 6(W126 chassis) # 5 (W124) as it powers the gauge cluster.

Thank you M.B. Doc for your quick response, I tried rolling and replacing fuse #5, and the light works fine, but the problem is that the other instuments still failed to function. Also, I forgot to mention that there is a strange noise coming from a relay inside of the fuse box that started when the gauges failed to work.

Take some sandpaper to the end of the fuse, go all around it as it is shaped like a cone on the ends. That should do it. If not you might have a plug on the instrument panel that is loose.

Hi,

While you are checking fuses, I suggest that you replace all of them given the age of your car.

Don't just look at them. Replace them assuming they are bad or are about to cause a problem. Clean the contacts as well. A good 15 minute and $10 investment to prevent problems.

Also, make certain you replace all the fuses and not just those in the main fuse box. Your service manual should have their locations.

Just to thank you all for your help on the subject, and to say I'm sorry that waited this long to do so, but I had to go out of town and just came back, but let me tell you that after you told me about the fuses I went and checked them all (visually) and turned them, and all look fine to me but the cluster was dead still then I read the message about replacing them all because the model of the car and went back and as soon as I removed the fuse corresponding to the cluster the metal piece on the fuse came apart (two pieces); well, I thank you again for the help and anybody else with a car that old, now know that is a good idea to replace all the fuses before trouble comes, even if they look new.
