1974 280c starter removal
My son (16) wanted a classic for his first car...a 1974 MB 280C. Te starter needs to be rebuilt, but I can't seem to get it off. What is the trick to getting to the top bolt on the starter to remove it? Once off, I have a great rebuild guy, but getting it off is stumping me.

I'll take a look at mine in the next day or so. I have never had to take mine out, thankfully.

Got it!
Thanks Chuck....we got it. The top bolt turned out to be a female hex head, that may be the metric equivalent to a 3/8". Anyway, we found a 3/8" hex head socket (brake caliper tool) that we could get on a rachet, and barely make the clearance to loosen it with a box-end wrench over the end for additional leverage. Definately a two person job...one from top to guide and hold the socket in place, and one from bottom to loosen. Good thing these things last for 29 years!

Glad you figured it out.
Uhhh ... if you are going to do any work at all on this car, spring for a set of 3/8 metric hex-key sockets, and long- and short-arm hex (Allen) wrenches. The type of bolt you encountered on the starter is all over the car. |
