Engine just died a horibble death on road. Made sound like the drive belt of a snowmobile disintegrating, shook the whole car and died. Power steering and brakes are REALLY fun when there is no power being supplied to them. I am having it towed to the local shop in the morning, in hopes that it is something simple, but from the sounds it made, I have a horrible feeling that the engine will need some MAJOR internal work. Does anyone know what engine type I have? I know that it is different than the standard American issue 4.5 liter, but other than that, not much. Any thoughts as to what other engines would fit in nicely at around the same cost as a full rebuild?

Sorry...Sounds like you ate your timming chain. Time to dump the car or open your wallet big time. When was the last time you had the timming chain changed ?

Timing chain was replaced with top end rebuild approx 40,000 miles ago. I jsut purchased the car with the thought of restoring it. Any easy way to check timing chain theory, other than having it towed to a shop?

Pull the left-hand (as you face the engine) valve cover - four little 13mm bolts. Everything should be nice and tidy in there - i.e. no shredded parts.

Unless your SLC is a 5.0, it is probably just a regular Euro 450 that were fitted to all the S-Class. You can find your engine's number in your owner manuel or the engine block. With that you can probably just order a rebuild from the dealer or a Mercedes engine rebuilder. Good luck.

I believe the 107.023 refer to the 350 SLC models. Are you sure you have the 450 SLC?
Gray markets are notorous for having their rear badges "upgraded".in any case, check the engine serial number:

107.022 280 SLC 110.986
107.023 350 SLC 116.984
107.024 450 SLC 117.985
107.025 380SLC 116.?

107.023 is a 350SLC built from '71-'73

The engine # is 116.982/4

450SLC's built from '73-'75 (107.024) have engine #117.982

(SLC's from '76-'80 are 117.985 as noted above)

So, question is, what year is your SLC?

It's a 1979. I actually met a gentleman at work today, who was having a complete stereo put into his 1979 450SLC 5.0. We were introduced, as the guys at work know that I love seeing all of the cars that they consider "odd". He may have a source for a low mileage 5.0 for me, with 4 speed transmission. I already have the lightwieght bodywork, and if I have to replace the engine, I might as well do it right.
