This is the barely known Mercedes W1, or the XMS. As you all know, the story of Santa Claus has it's roots in Germany (although he wasn't so nice - legend has it that presents were left for good children and then the bad children were beaten and stuffed into the empty sack!) Who better to trust the maintenance of a flying sleigh to other than MB?! Here is a better picture of the sleigh going in for an A service.

Thanks a lot BJSC.
is this something Mercedes actually designed and built. Id so, the responsable designer must surely have lost his job. What an awfull front end. Any idea when this thing was built? JackD |

Jack, this was a one-of-kind transport for '50s MB race cars. It was designed to transport the cars very quickly between races. The front body shell is derived from the old Ponton--check out the doors and windshield. The chassis is a modified 300SL spaceframe with a 300SL motor.
The car you see in the pics is a factory reproduction that they finished building just last year, the original having been destroyed some time ago.
