checkvalve for Brake system with traction

Is it possible for the vacuum checkvalve to go bad ? and if so what would the symptoms of a bad checkvalve be ?

More over from my understanding, the concept of the valve is to only let the pressure flow in one direction and stop the flow in the opposite direction. is that true ?
