I have a sony cybershot DSC-S70. I bought it from a friend who never used it. I did no research except the price. It works for me.

While I got mine for less than $80, which was VERY cheap for one with a digital display in it I am not overly pleased with my Polaroid PDC640. Takes bad dark pictures, only has 8mb of storage, and the resolution is just to small. For the price I suppose it wasn't that bad, but I'd like to get at about a 2.0Mp Olympus for the replacement.
IMO, Best Buy is way overpriced, if you want to window shop they are a good place but ebay is a nice place to buy them. Of course you only want to buy with a person who has a LOT of good feedback, brand new (shrink wrapped) with full warranty, not reconditioned, yada yada.... A lot of shady people there willing to sell you their crap. ~jm

About a month ago, I bought a Cannon G2. The features were great and the price was reasonable. Cannon now has the G3 so that's what the G2's price has been reduced.
The G2 will do a short movie with sound, take pics up to 4 megs and has a movable LCD screen, as well as a video out jack. It uses compact flash memory modules. It also has a USB out port. Nice camera.

I beat the selection process to death...
as I was sure I wanted something fairly advanced and was sold on the Sony CD400. But I was also very hot for the Fujifilm S602 for about the same $. My friend that shoots for a living has been walking many people through this decision of late and he just got the Fujifilm S2, a full SLR digicam that accepts all his Nikkor lenses. It's awesome and I'd love one but it's hard to justify 2 grand when the primary use for now is e-mailing pix like you are talking about shooting and e-bay. It's the point he kept making to me-unless you're printing and want pix > 5"x7", large files are a drag. So I grabbed a Fujifilm Finepix 2600Z from the clearance case at Sears for $125 that does a 2.3 mega-pix fine mode that I scarcely bother with. He was right-I end up re-saving the lowest res pics it can shoot as smaller files before mailing them. Normal looks great on screen too. I don't plan to print much of anything. As an aside, we blew up a pic of my daughter from his S2 to 8"x12" at Ritz and the results were stunning. You couldn't tell it was a digital photo and it wasn't even the highest resolution it's capable of. Digital photography has really arrived.

I went for a Olympus C-720. I has a 8X optical zoom which can get you in there nice and tight. The menu is easy and quck to use. 3.1 meg pix means good photos. I am quite happy so far.

I use a FujiFilm FinePix 1400Z. Its an older 1.3 megapixel and it worked great until I spilled a snow cone on it. Now it only works about half the time. I'm looking at getting a new Toshiba digital to replace it, and I've given up snow cones.

Digital camera response...
Hi there,
I use an Olympus D-460, it's a 1.3 megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom and 2x digital zoom. It's basically a "camera" camera adapted to digital, and the optics are extremely good. Since anything you put on the net is going to need to be smaller than 640 x 480 for quick loading, you don't need any more pixels, (this camera will do up to 1280 x 960) and the main thing is to be able to get up close and have a good flash on the camera, which this one does. It uses 4 AA batteries, and I got the NI-MH rechargables at Radio Shack, along with the recharger for $19.99 - they will go a week or so, taking up to 140 pictures a day, which we did on a recent trip to Ireland, before needing recharged. I have a 32 meg smartmedia card in it, which allows about 148 pix before downloading to my laptop. It has a very good tft lcd screen on the back, which will run the batteries down if you use it a lot, but if you use the viewfinder it is extremely good on battery life. I think as long as you go with a camera from a real camera manufacturer, like Olympus, Sony, Canon, etc. you won't be dissatisfied. I do like the compactness of my camera, it fits on a belt holder, and is very handy on trips. Regards, Richard Wooldridge '82 300D/4.3L V6 Etc.. |

camera's
Mine is a Sony DSC-P7. You can set it up to take picts of the correct res for posting. Or go to 3 megapixels and print great frameable shots for your ego wall.

Canon S30, great 3.2 mp digital. Small and feature packed.
Get the 128 meg card, you can't go wrong! Costco.com has it for $399.00, it comes with extra batt. and gig bag. I love mine.

The more mega-pixels the better. Pay close attention to the different lenses. A camera with 3X optical zoom will probably outperform a 10X digital zoom under most conditions. The quality of the optics is largely responsible for the price of the camera. As a lifelong amatuer astronomer I can tell you with certainty that when it comes to optics, you get what you pay for. I have a Nikon Coolpix 995. If I can ever get it away from my wife I'm sure I'd enjoy it very much!

ILUVMILS makes a great point about the zoom. If zoom is important to you, ignore the digital zoom number and just compare the optical zooms. Digital zoom sucks at just about any resolution, especially action photos.
