Attn Tools: Lincoln Vs Miller (MIG/TIG welders)
I have a lincoln square wave tig 250 machine. I got it because I wanted to be able to do metal, aluminum, stainless, etc. I heard Lincoln was better for TIG so I went with that, but from what I hear today from a Miller Rep is that, miller came up with square wave and lincoln enfringed on their patent. I suppose its like mercedes vs bmw.
I really like the Lincoln TIG welder, so I was thinking of getting a lincoln mig welder to match. However I welded at a local shop with the miller 210 mig welder and the miller rep (there to do demos today) told me that for what I want to do the 251 is a better machine because I want to mig up to half inch materials. The Miller Rep had the dynasty 200 tig welder to demo, it is compact and it is so awesome, I welded some aluminum today with ease, and it was fast because the machine is actually an inverter running at 60kHZ, not 60hz like my lincoln machine, so it can be on whatever part of the wave you want. Anyway, does anyone have some first hand advise compairing the Miller 210 or 251 against a compairable lincoln mig welder? Thanks a bunch. http://www.millerwelds.com/main/products/mig/M10701/ http://www.mylincolnelectric.com/Catalog/equipmentdatasheet.asp?p=2522&isolocale=EN

Welders
There are some experienced welding guys (e.g., MARTINSR) over at www.rodder.com/rodderrap/index.html that might be able to give you the info you seek.
They seem to hang out in the Body Shop sub-forum, or you could set up a Take a Poll. If there's a good sheet metal welder reading this in the Seattle area, I would sure appreciate some help setting up my little Hobart 135 Handler . . . . |

I got the Millermatic 251, and the 30A spool gun with all the accessories. I got hooked up good too. Well I did the deal and my dad paid for it. =).
It is such a nice machine. I highly recommend the 251 or the 210 miller. Thanks for your input. Now I have to figure out what hand grinder I need to get.

What do you do for a plate, rod, and square tube steel stock supply? I've been thinking about a few projects that would require some plate steel, very small quantities. Also would like to build a truck ladder rack from square tube stock.
Is there usually a local source that deals in small quantities? Ken300D Oh yeah, I'd need a welder too. Considering the Hobart Handler 175 MIG welder. http://www.hobartwelders.com/products/handler175.html |

I'm really qualified to participate in this thread! I still use a stick.
Good luck, |

If you ever watch "Junkyard Wars" on The Learning Channel (or whatever they call that channel now) you get to see a lot of welding. I've been impressed with what they can do with what looks like a MIG welder to me.
The toughest concept I have to get through is dealing with a welding helmet. I may try one of those auto-darkening things. I don't think I have the ability to start a weld while totally blind, like you do with the flip-down helmet. Who knows what I'd be welding? Ken300D |

I have never been a good welder, but once I bought an auto darkening filter, it made a welder out of me. As I said all I have is a crackle box stick welder, and it's not even a DC.
With a stick the auto darkening filter really helps. With a wire welder, however, I don't think it's all that necessary. You just put it in place and pull the trigger. Have a great day, |

Re: Hobart
See a few years ago Hobart and Bernard were like brothers, but now Miller owns hobart. They still make hobart, but they spend all their time and research into the miller line. I would suggest a millermatic welder. The Millermatic 210 is about 1200 bucks, its 220V, its really nice up to 3/8 stock in one pass. I got the 251 to have the big spool gun, the digital dials, and higher voltage, etc. Re:Junkyard wars I havent payed close enough attention. A mig welder is like a wand with a triger on it. Re: Autodarkening helmet. Those are really nice larry. The thing is, you can stay right where you need to without trying to throw down your helmet with your neck. I always put the helment down with my hands and I bring my other hand down to the electrode clamp, then I strike the arc. I am really good at stick welding, I have about 100 hours of practice. I used to buy stainless rod, but they dont make the kind that I like, so Now I have to find something else to use. I can tig weld, but I have to sit down and be very comfortable so I can be steady. I usually make latches and hinges tig welding.

I run an Stainless Steel Fab Company manufacturing mainly pressure vessels...all welders are ASME Certified. We use Millers...MIG, TIG, and Stick. We have 20+ units of various sizes. They have been very reliable.

Miller
I use a Millermatic 250 and added a 30a spoolmatic that I use just for Alum and SS. I use .35 wire for regular steel and I have to make several passes on 1/2 to 1 inch to get a good bond but it works great in the middle sizes. I would use smaller wire on exhaust pipes and body panels. With the 30a spoolmatic and .30 wire I can weld alum tubing that is .058 wall and have no problem with it holding and .30 wire seems to work on SS fine although I have not tried it over 3/8 inch thick.
I have an very old dinosaur miller that I am trying to learn to tig on, I should have taken up juggling!
