'77 280 SE auto transmission slipping

i recently purchased a '77 280 SE, and the transmission seems to be slipping. it's definately worse when starting from a stop or going up a slow hill, but recently it has also started slipping at highway speeds, then catches again.
i've checked the AT fluid, it doesn't look or smell burnt and is at the proper level.

this is my first AT car, so i'm at a bit of a loss for what to try next. i'm hoping i don't need to shell out the $ for a new tranny, as i just bought this car.

any suggestions? online troubleshooting guides?

thanks!
-kelly

When checking the ATF you have to have it at operating temp, not just warm. I've read 17 miuntes driving brings it to temp. Should be rock steady at the upper mark. My 4.5 will slip a little if down as little as 1 pint.

You can get a close gauge on the level cold though, but not an accurate read like you would hot. Cold the fluid will be about 10mm below the low mark if the tranny is filled properly.

Did you get any record with the car when you bought it? When was the tranny last serviced? Perhaps a fresh filter and fluid would be a good place to start. Be sure to drain the torque converter too for a complete fluid change.

i checked the level cold this morning, and it is above the cold mark, closer to halfway between the cold and hot marks. i assume this means the tranny was overfilled. could this be causing my problem? or could it be reading wrong because of a blockage somewhere? i'm not sure where the dipstick pulls from.

thanks,
Kelly

The dip stick for the tranny goes into the tranny pan. Being overfull should cause some leaking (blowing out the vent) and could likely cause slipping. You need to correct the fluid level. I use a small hand pump and just draw the excess fluid out the fill tube (where the dip stick goes) until the level is correct.

Try to lower the level to 10mm below the low line when cold then see how it does. If still slipping try the fluid & filter change.
