e420 help

I am a new owner to a 97 e420. I noticed that on my rear view mirrow are to colored plates. One is red and one is green. My initial impression was that this may be a radar detector built in but I have yet to find the controls. Can anyone help me as to what this is for?
Thanks from Charlotte

Hi Rob. Have a look at your owners manual.

Thanks for the reply. I see absolutely nothing about a radar detector or what the lights could mean. Does anyone else have ideas?
Thanks,
rob

Could it be an automatic headlight dimmer system??
Just fishing....

If you point your remote at it it will flash red or green,,, dpending if your doors are locked or not. In turn it will either lock or unlock your doors.

Yep you are right. Although I still don't understand why they are used. If you are in the car can't you just hit the door locks to lock the car? Or is this just an additional way to lock the doors or unlock the doors.

Thanks,
rob

It's really the only way to lock and unlock. You have the same red and green lights on the drivers door handle.

The flashing lights provide confirmation that the doors have actually locked/unlocked. When you're walking away from the car you don't need to watch the locks to make sure they operate. If you see the flashing red light you know the car is locked. Very helpful at night. Also, when you approach the car from the front or rear, you can aim your transmitter at the mirror to unlock the car. You don't need to wait until you're at the door to unlock the car. A big plus when it's raining!
