W140 will not pass over 5,000 r.p.m.???

A friend of mine owns a 1993 300SE 3.2 (S320) that has a peculiar problem: under heavy acceleration the engine will turn freely up to 5,000 r.p.m (-/+) and then it will quit suddenly (like the redline fuel cut-off is kicking in early).

Since this happen before the redline (at all gears) the car does not upshift correctly under heavy acceleration (it does however under normal load).

I remember a similar case on another friend's S600 (1996) where it will stick like that but at 3,000 r.p.m. We found out on that the S600 has a revolution sensor installed on the wheels, and if the tires are underinflated, the system will prevent the car to go over 3,000 r.p.m. Tire pressure was corrected and the car went back to normal.

Any guesses or suggestions on the problem with the 300SE???

Thank you in advance.

Check the fuel pump and filter! I would use a fuel pressure gauge taped to the windscreen to measure pressure while driving.
