Oil chage question

Hi guys, well my oil change was due and dealer was so bz that he told me to wait another month so i took it to a near by place they always deal with mercedes i have 1993 400e with original 45,500 miles and dealer always puts in full synthtic 5-40 valvorine this time i mentiones these people that but when i went to pick it up i asked them about the job they told me that they my mistake put 10-20 in it and they refused to change it for me for no additional cost they charged me 85.00 same as the dealer i brought my own oil filter so alltogether it just costed me 95 bucks (i know its crazy) now my question is this wether i can leave it inside or get another oil change ASAP how big of a difference in those two kinds car is smooth but its too heavy now its not runing i mean picking up as fast as before
thanks in advance
mani

how does a oil / filter change cost $85?

i take it to my mech and i bring my own filter and get charged $20 (of course its not synthetic)

i'm not an oil expert so i don't know if the stuff they put is good or bad....if u don't like it change it somewhere else but don't ever go to the place that messed up ever again

i mean they said they mistakenly put the wrong thing but still wanted to charge u to correct it.....please!

I've never before seen 10-20 weight oil. Regardless of that, I would INSIST that they put in what you specified, or don't pay them.

This is an ABSOLUTE PREMIUM PRICE for an oil change, I don't care what oil you're putting in. Two gallons of Mobil One is only about $40 worth.

I would never use oil that light in any engine if you are South of the Arctic Circle.

Best of luck,

Did they actually use 10-30W, and was it a synthetic? I'm a easy going person, but your easier going than me.
I have a small concern, unless you find out what oil brand and weight they used, filter, I would personally have my oil/filter changed again.

enjoy your drive, timreid

Mani,

Take a look at your owners manual, it will list which oil viscosities are acceptable at which temperatures. Mine lists a 10W30 for temperatures below 50F.

I also had my mechanic change my oil and he would charge $80 for the oil change using Valvoline Synthetic 15W40. I didnt have any problems but I decidede to start changing my own oil and spending the labor on better oil. I now use Amsoil 10W40 Full Synthetic and the car runs and starts so much better.

Mani, I'm from the old school of thought, and I would stick with the brand of oil you have used for the 45,000 miles. If you do change brands, which will be no problem, stick with your new brand of oil. There is a school of thought that changing oil brands to often can cause sludge in the engine.
Its a shame that the shop will not correct their error!

If I were you I would buy a Topsider and do it yourself and buy yourself a nice gift with the savings.
