Question 1996 S 320 failed vehicle emisions test ?

vehicle runs excellent, no problems, but took it to the VEIS which we must do every 2 years hear in Maryland and tech said car failed test or machine is malfunctioning. Stated the computer will not give readings but a OBDII test result as failed. what could this be? does anyone have a clue?

get it retested elsewhere for starters, with out codes and no check engine light, there really is nowhere to start.

All of the 1996 & later cars with ODB2 must pass a "ready" test. All of the systems must have performed their tests!
The most common problem is "tired" oxygen sensors that still work BUT aren't up to par as far as passing the ready test. ASK the testing station if the car failed the READY test. IF so ask what systems HAVEN'T been tested.
