Question 97 E300TD wheel shake

greetings from snowed-in Scotland.

My steering oscillates in the speed range 55-60mph- a typical example of a wheel out of balance, I'd say. However at the last service the adviser noted that the front anti-roll bar bushes were on their last legs and would need replacing. That was 8k miles ago (car has 71k on the clock).

could failed bushings cause this wobble? Tyres are P6000s with about 7k on them and healthy tread. Balanced when installed.

I've heard that wobbles, clonks and vibrations are often sourced to the exact opposite part of the car that they appear to come from. Could it be something at the rear? The rear covers are pretty worn and due for replacement soon

Thanks all.

first off rotate the tires and drive it, if the "wobble" is gone, there ya go, bad tire or wheel.

steering shocks, worn idler arms and worn tie rods will amplify this as well.

For 'shimmy' at the steering wheel, I would not suspect a rear suspension problem. Wander, or other handling peculiarities CAN prompt an inspection there, however.
