Well fellow listers, it's time to cut loose with a few bucks in a good cause.

I find myself scrounging for those 20mm to 30mm wrenches all to often and its time to crack the piggy bank and get some tools for the 20mm to 30mm or, plus, size range.

I would hope those of you on the list might tell me what of those larger wrenches are needed for work on the Mercedes. We currently have a 1991 190E 2.3 8v automatic and a 1983 240D manual. To start off it would have been nice to have a 22mm crowfoot to remove the old primer pump from the 240D.

Other than the normal 4-19mm wrenches, screw drivers, Mity vac, torque wrench, and analog meter, what have you found absolutely necessary to service your Benz? Also whats nice to have and what would be on your wish list for tools?

Although not a "tool" my favorite is the battery disconnect knob. It makes working on the car so much easier turning off the juice by twisting a knob. I have the one with the bypass to keep the clock and radio presets intact.

A 1/2" drive comes in handy on the suspension bolts, as do the handle extensions for more leverage. Those Stuttgart "gorillas" really know how to tighten down those bolts.

The Black & Decker "Snake Light" is handy when working under the dash or under the car.

On your 240D, one of the most important regular maintenance items is valve adjustment. Although it can be done with conventional tools, the designed tools (two bent wrenches and a spring-holder wrench) make the job a lot easier, once you learn how to use them.
Another good tool to have is a "pistol-type" vacuum pump, to check and diagnose the extensive Mercedes vacuum system.
The best "tool" you can have is a good shop manual, preferably one published by MB. JEG

If you already have English sizes, once you get above 17MM, you can substitute English sizes for any Metric bolt you can find on your Benz.

The only thing I would possibly get above 17MM, would be a 27MM Deep socket for injectors and it is handy for the harmonic balancer bolt.

If you have no English sizes at all, then you need odd numbers from 21 to about 29.

On the larger wrenches, I just need a 21 and a 22mm. Anything larger than that and you usually need a socket anyways, such as a 27mm socket to rotate the crankshaft through, for example.
