help I cannot fix my steering

I have an 84 190d and I have had a problem with my steering that I cannot figure out. The problem is that it wanders at highway speeds, it takes constant corrections to keep it on the road. I have replaced everything that had any play in it such as the steering dampener, drag link, idler arm bushings, rear outer controll arm bushings and a steering gear box. After all of this time and money, I went and got a four wheel alignment and none of the above has had any affect on my problem. About the only thing that I havent replaced yet was my front shocks, and I dont think that they need to be because it dosent bounce when I go over bumps and it still handles pretty well.

I am about at my witts end with this car that I love so much,

If anyone can give me any advice it would be greatly appriciated

Thanks
Falling out of love,
Ed

Could be you're looking at the wrong end...........

The multi-link rear suspension has plenty of bushes to wear out, any one of which could cause the car to wander about rather than steer straight.

Have as good tug on each end of all the links, loaded and unloaded. There's a good chance you'll finnd some play there.

Paul is right. The only thing I can add is that I have certainly had shocks cause what you are describing.

Good luck,

Rear end steer occurs when the rear rubber wears out.

Sometimes tires can cause wander.

If the alignment was not done correctly & toe-in is not correct you may have a lot of problems especially in the wind.

You could take it to the dealer for suspension check & alignment and see what they come up with. In my experience the dealer has been helpful and indys have not been able to align my car correctly.

Rear thrust links, rear toe links, front struts, steering box, idler arm bushings, overinflated tires and those little sidewall 40's come to mind.

Reading Joe's message reminded me to point out that the front shocks on this car are not merely front shocks, but struts, meaning that they are not only dampers, but structural members of the suspension.

Good luck,

I have given the rear end a good shake down and I cannot find any weak links, The tires are brand new and I really don't think it is the shocks, If it is the shocks, they sure do not seem bad at all, none of them are leaking any oil.
Thanks
Ed

I would take it to the dealer for alignment. I had 4/4 indys set the front alignment wrong and 1/1 dealers set it correctly. The usualy problem is too little toe-in when a spreaer bar is not used. If there is a problem & I bring it back the foreman usually checks it out and has provided useful information. YMMV.
