Ginger
Glad it's fixed. Now did the mechanic do anything other than what I said before (or other advice in this thread)?
I replaced mine some time ago, total cost around $140 if memory serves. New tumbler was ordered from the dealer ( fill out a form providing vehicle info and proving ownership) which takes a few days to arrive. In the meantime, the mechanic removed the tumbler and loaned me an old one he had so I drove around with my key for the doors and his key for the ignition. Swapped out when the new tumbler arrived.
Most likely the new tumbler will come with a new key. My advice is to use the new key from now on. Using the old worn key tend to wear down the new tumblers quickly.

You guys are great! You are quite a "support" group. I am sure I will be a regular here because this is the "only" vehicle I have at the moment and it needs quite a bit of work. Tell me, which is the best forum to post all the problems with my car so I can get the best advice? I need to know the best places to buys parts, how to prioritize my repair list, etc.

Although the car needs significant work, I love it. I see that many of you own several of this make. A guy that owns 2 told me to gradually have it brought up to par, but I am not sure where to draw the line. Even if I buy another car, this one currently costs $15.00 per year for property tax and about $600 or so per year to insure.

I am not sure exactly what this guy did and plan to ask him so I can post it here to help others. I was inside at the moment he got it started.

By the way, what is the difference in a Junior and Senior Member?

See ya!:)

Jr/Sr - has to do with how many posts you have put up.

Although he may have fixed it I would proceed with a tumbler change, steering lock inspection. That would be my #1 priority right now:).

get to know this web site.

For help with repair problems, post in the Diesel forum since your car is a diesel. Fellow diesel owners can be more specific. Also you can get help on the Tech forum.

Get a signature and include your car model and year. This makes it easy for others to be aware of what car you are referring to.

Believe me, I have spent more time surfing the forums here than anything else since last Friday. I love the site. I am learning quite a bit about cars.

This is great because something I read here may keep me from getting ripped off when I talk to a mechanic or go to the repair shop.

:)

I had this same problem with my 190e! I had to take it to the shop.

What a bunch of gentlemen. :)

A woman with car trouble, crying, and named "Ginger."
Just look at all the good feeback! How could anyone resist. ;)

I am surprised no one asked her to post a pic. :D

haasman 02-13-2003 05:17 PM

Let's see your picture! We'll start there ....:)

EricSilver 02-13-2003 05:28 PM

I should. :)

I really thought this was an entertaining thread. The next time I have a problem, I'm changing my identity to "Sexy Female" so I can get tons of attention. :)

haasman 02-13-2003 05:34 PM

You are absolutely right. A strong welcome by the group!

There was a woman who posted regarding her brakes, I believe about three or four months ago. Same response. It is great.

My daughter will occasionally go through the threads, often using my member name to see what I have posted. She likes this group and realizes what an asset it is for all of us. We had joke about how many pages this thread has.

I will admit that I *always* stop to help a female motorist in trouble -- especially a Benz driver. I suppose it's one of those "men at their best" things. :)

Ginger97 02-13-2003 07:25 PM

How about a picture of me and the car? Then you'll get to know both of us. I can tell you that it will "Not" be a picture of me stretched across the hood in a swimsuit! :) :o

haasman 02-13-2003 07:52 PM

Aw, come on Ginger!

Yes, post a picture.

Sorry, but I don't have a recent pic at the moment. I don't have them taken very often, plus I am usually the one taking the pictures. Last picture was about a year ago and 30 lbs. heavier.

I wouldn't dare post a "former" me since I like the "different" me better. Hopefully I will have one in a few days.

Enough about me...Now about the car.... Have an appointment next week to have the ignition and steering lock checked. I have a few other things I will ask the mechanic to check, so I will do a new post for comparison to what he tells me.

See you in the next thread.

Back to your issue. You can replace the tumbler very easily yourself. I posted the complete directions (to a W124 anyway) a little while ago. It's a wonderful eureka moment.

Look at post 'ready to cut ignition tumbler'
