Vacuum Modulator Valve on a 1993 2.6L 190E
 
Do I need to drop the transmission in order to replace the vacuum modulator valve on a 1993 190e 2.6L. .
Also, the car engages hard when the shifter is moved to D (for Drive) from any other gear and I feel that it takea a split second to engage noticed by a late engagement after I push the gas (I hear a hrash click (it just doesn't feel right). Is this a tranny issue or differential or drive shaft? Any help would be appreciated. Tranny fluid and filter was changed.
Any help would be appreciated.

I'm guessing that the noise issue is not trans related. More likely driveline play or loose differential mounts.

It will be hard to replace the modulator without dropping the rear. We adjust them without dropping but its a little of a trick in the 201 body. Not much room.

I adjust numerous modulators every week. I replace them commonly on rebuilds but I have only seen a few bad ones. I would say less than one a year for near thirty years. Thousands and thousands of adjustments. There is a real good chance I will make some form of modulator adjustment on every 30k service we do and on older diesels even more often than that.

Thank you Steve. I will check the differential mounts and give an update on what I find. Another question I have for you is about the OVP relay. I read an article on the net for you about the "current" to the EHA valve and the idle valve. It was great. My 190e is running rich. It just uses more gas than it should. The car idles fine, however, it feels sluggish when it takes off and during kick down. I couldn't detect any current to either the EHA and idle vlave and the 10A fuse is ok on the OVP relay. Do you think I should get a new relay?
I checked the on-off ratio with an osciliscope and I can see a continously moving square wave. Ratio was about 50/50 at idle.
Is there a way to check the relay with a multimeter.

The relay is just power supply. if the system works the relay is working. The fact that you had a 50% duty-cycle means that its working. (any reading means its working).

The fact that you get the duty cycle means you should retry the current. The current should be zero at 50% duty cycle though. Fifty percenet duty cycle should go away as soon as the O2 sensor heats up. A constant duty cycle of 50% indicates a code for an open O2 sensor circuit.

To verify the current is working look for a 20ma current with key on engine off.
