Thanks for bringing this car to my attention. The seller is only about an hour's drive from where I live. Am taking a long weekend and I might drive up and take a look-see at the car since I notice it still has 5 days of bidding left on it.

iw ould think that if your not willing to invest say 20,000$ you should walk.you may not need this much but i think you should be prepared.i'm sure that wire harness is pretty expensive and i know the v-12 has alot of unique parts to start with.you could cut costs by doing alot of stuff yourself but only you'll know what you can handle.if you do take this on(and i hope you do-good luck!) keep us apprised of your progress.

Oh, my dream car.

I'd consider it if I could see it, but mot making the trip.

I agree with the $20,000 guess for parts

Then again, I'm OK with taking risks.

Consider an after market Auto Warrenty package. Let then take the risk.

Well, assuming the E-box is OK and AC/heater has no damage, I can't see 20k in repairs here. Main engine harness is about $400, and depending what was removed before the fire, I'd say 3-5 K in parts. I don't think engine has any damage, it needs paint job on the intake manifold, and would have to come out for proper repair. The big question is E-box, AC/heater unit, and the fuse box. Anyway, I've sent question to the seller to email detailed pictures of the underhood area and parts in the trunk.
I believe, if the price wouldn't go much higher, it may make sence for big DIY project.

The injectors hurness on the top of the engine was $380 from Phil and about 2 hours to install. Idid it on my 600SEL, no problem. But there are more wiring there in the engine compartment.

I'd be crazy enough to buy that car... if only I wasnt using the money working as a tech to pay my way through medschool... lol

Anyone who'd be able to spend the time with it I think could probably come out on top.

What a beautiful car. A mechanics dream. Those are always in the shop, but they make mechanics lots of money. Make sure to buy one of those aftermarket insurance plans, they usually cover the timing cover reseal, tranny job, and all that kind of stuff. Very limited car. Mercedes spent a lot of money on that engine. They didnt make much money on the car because the engine was so expensive. The right bank is pretty much an M104 head and the other side is a copy. They are pretty cool to work on, but everything takes 20 hours or more. Like when people talk about the $2 part that costs $2000 to put in. Yeah that takes about 15-20 hours because you have to take the whole intake systems off, etc. It seems to me like its easy to work on, it just takes a long time. If you look up the price of an SL600 and an SL500 you will find that the SL500 has a higher resale value vs the SL600 because they are always in the shop just like the S600 coupe. If you dont drive them, more goes wrong with them.

Hey guys, remember something. The M120 engine is really the same as having two engines. Two separate ignition systems. Two air flow sensors, throttle actuators, etc. It's only my opinion, but I wouldn't consider buying that thing for half of the current bid. Even though the interior looks nice, how does it smell? I've seen smoke damaged cars that still stunk even after the ENTIRE INTERIOR was removed, including the headliners! I wouldn't worry too much about the wiring harnesses either. It's my guess that they'll only eat up a small percentage of the total parts bill. Be careful

Folks: I am thinking of going up tomorrow to take a look as RIC is only about 45 miles away.

I am having the same thoughts--the S series is a complex car but I thought that most of the problems were with the newer models with all the electronics.

I am worried about ANY type of fire damage. You never know what has been damaged. And that engine is going to have to be completely removed, I would think. I also want to closely inspect the paint all around the hood area for blistering from the fire.

I also want to see if the current owner got ANY info on how the fire started and how long it was going on for. Fire and fire damage is tricky....even the stuff that looks good inside could be damaged from any intense heat that spread below to the "fire wall". The wiring to the switches on the center panel on the inside could all be fried.

Can the S-series experts on here give me some things that I should look at especially close? I am planning to take my digital cam if I make this trip, so if you could tell me what to take closeups of, I can do it.

I saw that one of the posters here was going to ask the seller to take some pics....did they and have you been able to evaluate the damage?

I have not checked the most recent bid, so I don't know if it has increased from last nite's amount.

Appreciate the help. If I go and take the pics, I would be happy to send them to a MB mechanic to look at and discuss.

This is one that I think might just be best to walk away from. But you never know and since I am close and can look, it can't hurt to take a nice drive up to RIC and take a look at an interesting car.
