Engine dies on startup

Hopefully this is a simple one, here it is...
Lately (as of about a month ago) when I start my car ('87 560SEL) the engine revs to about 1000 and then abruptly dies. This happens whenever the engine has been off for more than say 10 minutes, not just when cold. As soon as it dies, I just start it again and everything is fine. Any help on what could be causing this would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you are loosing fuel pressure.

Before you can take it to a MB mechanic try this "field diagnosis". Turn the key to the on position (all the lights should be on) but do not start the car. You should also hear the fuel pump(s) working. Leave it like that for a few seconds. Turn the key off and then, start the car. If the problem is better or gone, you are loosing fuel pressure somewhere. Take it to your favorite mechanic for proper diagnosis/repair.:D

Me too!!!

I got the same problem with my 190 but for me it seems to be a result of the cold weather here -10 C at least, when it was warmer the car starts right up with out a problem. Seems as if the idle control does not kick on fast enough on the first try, I might have to adjust it.

No luck...
I turned on the car (not the engine) as suggested, heard the fuel pump go and after about 10 seconds started the engine, however it died as usual. Does anyone have any idea what this might be??
Thanks
Justin

this actually happened on my 300e for its entire life.. I just turned the key to start and held it there until the second start.. I could hear it fire up but it would die and then in a second it would fire up again.. I put over 200k on the car and never had any ill effects from starting it like that.. Mercedes says it can take up to 5 seconds of starting for the car to run normally. I know its doesnt seem normal but I replaced almost EVERYTHING trying to solve it without success.
