Removing Shift lever
I would like to remove my standard shift lever on my '87 420SEL and replace it with a wood unit. I know how to remove the wood console panel, but upon examination I could not figure out how to remove the notched plate that covers the shift lever mounting point (the black one with P R D 4 3 2 on it) which exposes the rubber boot covering the end of the shift lever. I don't want to break anything so I will wait for response. I am sure it must be staightforward, but I did not see any fasteners, etc. to allow removal.

Thanks for the help.

There are four bolts (10mm or 12mm) that hold the complete shift gate to the tranny tunnel. Removing the four bolts allows you to lift the assembly. You do need tom disconnect the shift linkage from below. These bolts also keep the assembly halves together, so soon as they are removed the shift gate will sort of spring apart with the halves turning about 90* to on another. Nothing terribly difficult.

Thank you Mike for your rapid response. By the way it was your post on repairing the wood console piece that I studied last year to learn just how easy it was to remove the console cover in the first place. You obviously know your way around this car!!

By the way Mike, that was a fantastic job you did on that S model last year. I followed all your posts on it just because I was curious about whats involved even though I have a 300CE. Good Show !!!!
