88 190 E Door panel removal
 

Anyone have tips for removing the driver door panel on an '88 190 E, with electric seat control switches on the door panel?

My girlfriend already broke the headrest switch off (accidentally, she says...), and I don't want to break another by removing them the wrong way.

There's a dent in the driver door that I think can be popped out, if I can get to the other side of the metal. The holdup right now is getting those switches off without ruining them.

On a '91, the switch unit comes off w/o removing the door panel. As I recall, all the buttons pop off, then a plastic c-clip around one of the switch bases. The escutcheon then slides off, allowing access to two screws retaining the switch ass'y. If you DROP the screws, the door panel will have to be removed.

I have removed the door panel, but remember only it wasn't hard after doing a message search here for the procedure.

Its not that I thought I had to remove the door panel to remove the switch, but rather that I need to remove the switch in order to remove the door panel.

I did try a search but didn't come up with anything concerning those seat switches. I'll have to try searching on some different terms. I guess I could also just try pulling them off and hope nothing breaks!

on my 1990 190e the buttons just pop off with a little pressure. And yes ,the switch must be removed before the door panel will come off.

As I said, there are screws. These screws attach the switch to the door, not the panel. If you pull it off, it will cost you $70 at FastLane to replace the broken switch!

If the stem for the headrest switch didn't break. The switch can be replaced. I bought one from ************************ for less than a buck.

Wow! What did you buy? The stock switch ass'y has 5 captive double-throw, multipole switches - more if a memory switch. Mine did not dissemble in any useful fashion. I saw little in the way of switches at Performance Products.
