s500 coupe door assist

I have a 1995 s500 Coupe, last week the driver door would not suck in, pass. door and trunk work fine. Pulled the fuses in the trunk to no avail. I am thinking that the micro switch in the door is bad. Is there any way to get to the switch? BTW, what triggers the window to go down a bit when the door is opened? and close again when the door is closed? Are there more than one switch in the latch?

Thanks, Steve

depress the switch to have window glass all way down, close the door, raise the glass up to close position. this will reset the window. If not , you got something else wrong.

Renny,

Do you here the air release after you close the door? Does your window's go up and down momentarily? Let me know.

Thanks for the reply,

I tries putting the window down then up to no avail. The window does go down and up a bit when the door is opened and closed all the way. However the vacume assist for the door does nothing. I am assuming that there is a switch of some kind that is in the door latch that controls the door assist as well as the window closing.

Few years ago, the battery was weak, I had the same problem like yours. After I changed the battery, and reset the window as I described before it was back to normal. Maybe should try to reset the window while engine is running. Anything beyond that,I can't help any more.
Let me know if you get the answers.

Vaccum

There is a vacuum in the left side of your trunk. I suspect that you have a hose (line) loose from your vacuum. When you close the passenger door or the trunk, do you hear the air release? I am very curious to know if it is that vacuum or not. Best of luck, let me know what you find out.

I hear the air release when the trunk is closed. Since the passenger door assist still works I will try to listen for it on that door.

I just relaized something else last night. When I get in the car and close the door to the point where the door assist used to work, the seat belt arm extends. So it thinks that the door is shut when it is not shut all of the way. Is the seat belt arm activated by the same micro switch in the door? If it is I bet you may be right and I have a vacuum leak or loose hose.

If it is a loose hose or a leak, you have nothing to worry about, its not that much to fix. I hope it is indeed a loose hose or a swithc (inexpensive).

Try Resetting the close assist pump in the trunk located at the Drivers side on top of the wheel well...You will have to remove the R/R and center carpets to locate the pump..then remove the pump from a foam sock/cover to Reset the pump..Unplug the pump for 5min..then try opperation..I Have found this to work on several W140s..hope it helps Good Luck

I disconnected the pump, waited about 15 minutes then reconnected it. The pump operates, but the door does not suck in. I assume that the pump is bad on that line. I will just shut the door myself for the time being!

Thanks for all of the help.

This has happened . . . .

on my '94 S500 at least three time in four years! At very unexpected times to boot! Nothing was replaced, battery was not removed, etc..

All times it was fixed by following the 'sketchy' procedure given in your Owners Manual on page 68. It states:
If the door windows cannot be fully opened or closed automatically by pressing the button past the point of resistance (e.g. after the vehicle battery change), press the UP SIDE of the power window switch until the window is completely closed and hold for additional 2 seconds. Repeat the procedure for each window.
The automatic full opening and closing procedure of the door windows should now be restored.

As I remember, I also moved the windows down to the bottom also holding the switch for a few seconds after the window bottomed. Then repeated this at the top doing this LAST!

Also found that the Mercedes "2 seconds" can be more like "5" or "6". But this procedure (as modified) worked like a charm!
