Engine Swap in 1992 300SE W140
I want to put a diesel engine in my 1992 300SE W140
Am I correct in assuming that a straight 6 diesel will replace teh straight 6 petrol I ma located in Ireland where gas is $1 a litre so I need hte economy. I know the performance will be much less. Thanks for any advice. |

Most diesel engines the MB used for cars don't have enough torque to pull that 2 ton beast. The S350D turbo(1992-95 in US) was a "SAD" example of MB quality as most of the engines had problems as they weren't upto the task.

I believe that...
...Mercedes made a diesel engine for the W140 sedan. The diesel W140 was sold only in Europe. So the swap that you're contemplating may be physically possible. You may wish to check into this further.

Only one engine. The 92-93 300SD had the same 3.5l engine as the 94-95 S350. Essentially the same car. Possibly the same 603.971 engine as in the 90-91 350SD and 350SDL which are the 126 body style.
It'll be interesting to see if the OM606 will go into a 140. Sixto 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

The W140 ws available first with a 3.5 liter turbodiesel which, as everyone knows, turned out to be a complete reliability disaster. The car was called the 350SD and was available almost wordwide including the U.S.
Later on, the diesels were pull out of the U.S. market including the 350SD. Europe and the rest of the world saw the S300 TurboDiesel born into the market and became very popular, (mostly in Europe where gas prices are very high). I ask the main question of this thread to the local M.B. service advisor once and he replied that the swap is NOT that easy. Many factors have to be taken into the account, including a whole new electrical/electronic system (which could raise your budget into the stratosphere, specially on a W140). Although in some models the swap from a gas engine into a diesel one is not that tedious, most swaps from a diesel car into a gas version is almost impossible, to say the least.

Trade for an E-Class or C-Class diesel?
