Aux. Water pump

The Aux. Water Pump on my 88 TE has a slow leak. Has anyone had a similiar problem? Anyone ever re-built a 124 pump? Is there a kit available? I have done a search and found info. on rebuilding a 123 pump, are the pumps on the 123 similiar to the 124?

What is the procedure to test it's function while on the car? The heater in the car works fine (no complaints from the boss). So I assume it is functioning properly.

It looks as if the case comes apart with four phillips screws. trying to determine if I should just bite the bullet and order a new one ($140-150.00)

Thanks in adnavce.

The pump has changed part numbers 3 OR 4 times but they are interchangable in almost all cases.
There isn't a rebuild kit for the later version that is in your car.

Had a leak on mine which is a 90 300CE, was leaking in 2 spots and was lucky to stop them by snuging those screws up a touch. Its been at least 7 months now and its DRY.

I will try tightening the screws. It is a very minor leak at this point.

I have been told that this pump can be bypassed. Does anyone have experience with tis? I assume you would lose some heating efficiency while the car is at idle without the pump.

Thanks,

Ed C.

I forget to tell you that before I tightened those screws I put a touch of silicone sealer at both leaks. Just snugged the screws up a little to prevent breaking the plastic. I still check it once and a while. It worked for me.........

I routed around mine on my 300SE. Heater still works great down here in Texas, even when we get those occasional unbearable Artic 32 degree days. I see you are in Carolina; you guys got some real cool stuff recently, but you should be fine.

Yes, here in Charleston we have had a few days of low temps. in the 20's but yesterday it was in the mid 70's so I think a small drop in heater efficiency won't be a problem.

What did you use to route around the pump? A small pipe or elbow?

Thanks for all the responses.

I used a piece of metal tubing and bent it to reasonably fit.
Mine was on a 300 SE so it may be located differently.

Just a follow up. I torqued the 4 phillips down on the pump, one of which was definately loose. Keeping my fingers crossed but the leak is gone (at least for now).

I checked the pumps function by taking off the small plastic cap and feeling for the turning shaft with the defroster on full heat. All seeems well.

Thanks to all for the suggestions/advice.
