Checking power steering pump fluid...
...on a 1989 300TE.
This sounds like a silly question, but I need to know how to check the power steering fluid level. I know how to open the reservoir and look inside, but what am I looking for? How do I check it? car warm? cold? What is the proper fuild level? Can I use ATF Dexron fluid? Thank you for your help.

When you pull of the cover, the level should be at the rim which is about 1/3" beow the lip. For fluid, your owner's manual should tell you, and it probably says to use ATF. It's not until the last couple model years that MB specified their "special" P/S fluid. Remember, there is a filter in there that needs to be changed at regular intervals, along with the fluid.
