Ah-h-h-h - looks like normal winter weather here in Manitoba Canada. I have a 12.5HP 33" wide Craftsman snowblower that will do that driveway in 10 minutes tops!! A good day to have a kettle of homemade beans simmering on the woodstove while sipping a hot chocolate in an easy chair looking out the picture window! The only thing you are missing is the 6 point buck standing out there looking in the window at you.

Yeah.... well i got lucky

My snowthrower broke about 3 winters ago, and the last couple winters, we just havent needed it...so of course here comes today, and all I had was a couple dingy snow shovels.

Murphy's Law right...

So thank god my neighbor realized my peril and brought his 18" thrower over... we did it in about 25 mins for the driveway... I have about 200 ft of sidewalk, which took another 20 mins or so.

Then it took me 1.5 times that to get the three additional inches that fell with the aforementioned dingy shovels.

Now the street still hasnt been plowed, and I theoretically have to leave for work in 13 hours, so we shall see how that goes.

Im feeling a chill coming on from being outside all day lol....im thinking sick day, but we'll see. Im not in the mood to dig out the wall in front of my driveway that im sure the plow has left. I guess 11 grand in property taxes doesnt buy you reasonably prompt plowing... Oh well.

Welcome to new jersey

Estimate 28" in Falls Church VA. But I have a 17 year-old son who wanted to get out to see his girlfriend. The ultimate snowblower!

What's the big deal folks. We have had 26 days in a row with snow here in Buffalo. We don't look at it and talk about it. Like a fine car with problems, we deal with it.

Godd luck and remember snow is for kids of any age. Make the best of it.

Here is the big deal

And i've said this time and time again.

These areas are not prepared in any way shape or form for a snowfall of this magnatude....

My street still isnt plowed... I can't get a car out, and I really doubt if it will be plowed till tomorrow. I spent some time in Toronto, near your city and yes there was plenty of snow, but they were on the ball with it.

This area, a storm of this magnatude just shuts anything and everything down. I still remember the bizzard of 1996 - we were stuck here for a week.

That just doesnt happen in areas that get a lot of snow. I remember in Toronto it was routine to see 4-5 ft of snow on lawns etc, but the roads were perfectly clear... Not the case here. 21 dead already due to the storm, and I'm sure it will climb as morons head back to the road, without any clue how to drive in this weather, or any preparation to deal with it. Summer tires - All season at best - People do not even know what a tire chain is around here.

Oh well sorry for the ranting -

George

I know what ur saying. I grew up in CLE, OH ( lake effect anybody? LOL ) and spent plenty of fun wkends skiing in western NY and even up in Quebec. I can deal with it but like George says, this area isn't used to, or prepared, for this kind of wallop.

I have to tell you tho that I like living in the mid-atlantic area alot better in that the sun actually shines on a fairly regular basis compared to CLE, Buffalo, Detroit etc. You can go for weeks without seeing the sun out there. I don't miss that at all. It's depressing.

artpb - I spent most of my life in Rochester, and 7 years going to school in Buffalo, and all I can say is that I'm so glad I don't have to deal with that weather anymore! One thing I've realized after moving to DC is that, certainly, you can deal with it in places like Buffalo, but they could down her also if there weren't so many people. Just picture Main Street Buffalo, packed with cars at 8am on a weekday morning after/during a huge snow fall. No one can move, the plows can't get through, and everyone is just stuck. That is what it's like down here because the population is so huge and so many people are on the road.

After yesterday's snowfall I was reminiscing about when my brother and I, after a storm, would get in his front wheel drive VW rabbit or Dodge Omni, etc., and play rally-driver out on the streets. Good luck doing that down here. There are just too many people and the streets are too narrow and crowded. I think that's the bottom line why they can't deal with the snow in these areas.

All of you have to relax. I worked/commuted to Crystal City for 10 years. I've been stuck there before on many occasions. No big deal.

You missed my point. Stay out of the fray. Pick up a book or surf the net or something. It's at times like this that we put off until tomorrow what we may not be able to do today sanely.

Well, we were closed yesterday due to the weather so I played outside with my kids! We live on a dead-end street with a real steep hill. Perfect!!! So anyway, Tuesday morning I get to work and what do I see. About 200 cars that need to be dug out, cleaned and moved to make way for the snow clearing equipment!!! About thirty of us got to work and we finished in about seven hours. I guess tomorrow I'll actually work on a few cars. I can use the rest!!!
