'98 C280 "Bad Compressor"

The compressor went out in my car today  right when it started to warm up down here in sunny Florida. Well I looked on Fastlane but they do not have the part so do any of you happen to know the cost of a new compresor? Would a rebuilt or recycled one be a bad idea?

Thanks,
Christopher

Almost ALL MB's after 1997 use the same A/C compressor so a good used one would be easy to find. MB does offer both Reman & new units complete with clutch.

You did not say how it failed. If it simply lost the shaft seal, then replace the compressor, filter drier, evacuate and charge.

If on the other hand the compressor failed internally, the system should be thoroughly flushed, flushed and flushed again along with the above steps. Failure to completely flush the system will result in the loss of the replacement compressor.

Good luck,

It has a full charge and is not loosing any Freon. The compressor is giving erratic pressures it keeps going up and down. There is also a noise similar to grinding your teeth coming from the compressor.

Thanks for the help.

This sounds like an internal failure. Thorough flushing will most definitely be in order.

Good luck,
