Different Rear End for 300TE

Has anyone researched switching the rear end of a 300TE with one from a 300E? I understand the TE has lower gears than the E. I figured better gas mileage with E rear end.

No, but improving fuel mileage isn't as simple as lowering road rpms, unless most of your driving is at high speed on open roads. The important thing is to operate the engine where it is most efficient - presumably already done by MB when they optimized your car design.

If you DID get lucky and your overall mileage improved a touch, you'd still have to get a heck of a deal on the rear end swap of a perfectly good differential to make the deal financially worthwhile. Plus, you would likely have slightly poorer pickup and passing power. My $0.02.

Good advice. Only asking because I'm getting a vibration from the rear between 2200 and 3000 rpms and if the problem is the pinion gear and I was going to switch out the rear end anyway... Just a thought. Has anyone rebuilt the rear end or have any ideas what the vibration would come from? The pinion seal is weaping a little bit. Nothing to write home about though.
