scratched windscreen...help!
Hello all! Im new here and I love this site.Very helpful indeed.
I have a scratch on my windscreen(not deep) that came from a little pebble stuck on my wiper blade and when I turned on my wiper it left a streak from wiper resting position to behind the rear view mirror. Can this be buffed out? Thanx,Chris |

Buffing out marks leaves a concave in the glass and distorts view its not a good idea.

General rule of thumb, if you can feel the scratch when running a finger nail over it, it can't be rubbed out. There are glass polishes which clean really more than remove anything. You might want to speak to your insurance company. Is the scratch in your line-of-sight or impair your vision? Safety issue? Haasman

My insurance company recommends that one try to fill a nick, pin hole with a filler (some new process that is cheaper and less problematic then replacement)....if one is not satisified with the result, they will then replace.

Thanx all,it sounds like the best thing to do is to let it be as I am getting used to it.
Insurance company wants $450 aussie dollars for excess, and a new screen costs $200. |

its best just to get the windscreen replaced its probably going to be the easiest thing. you might spend the money on getting it buffed or repaired and then it might not end up bieing much better, then you have to get it changed later anyway.
look up in the yellow pages for glass repairs maybe someone can heat it or blend it or something, i dunno i'm not a glass technician but good luck.

FWIW - I went to purchase Rain-X and was told that the chain has discontinued it because there have been many incidents of windshield breakage. Apparently Rain-X contains silicon or some chemical which gets into cracks and expansion during freezing conditions can crack the windshield.
I don't recall the name of the replacement product but it appears to work as well.
