Need info on 1980 W116 120 Turbo Diesel Model
Hi,
Does anyone know what is the model of this car, like 300D or 300SD? it is missing the emblem and owner's manual. The vin tag had 116 120 so I assume it a W116 car with a 120 engine? What is the horsepower and torque of the engine? What size is the engine? Is is an actual 3.0L? Is there a market for these cars? My friend has one and is looking to sell it but he does not know anything about MB's, the car only has about 100K on it. It needs paint and mechanical work. Any info will be helpful. Thanks, Dan

The 116 diesels were the first of the turbodiesels brought to the US by MB. The engine is very similar to that found in the '82 to '85 300D's and the 126 300SD's.
There is a bit of a following for these cars. I think they are really neat cars. They offer good fuel economy, body and chassis construction worthy of a three pointed star and durability. The name plate should say 300SD. As with ANY used car, condition is everything. Just because it is a particular model, does not mean you should buy it. If you are not experienced in evaluating used cars, you should find an experienced, and honest MB specialist and pay him to inspect and evaluate the car. Good luck, |
