New Rubber: Bearings

I'm replacing my rear axles (right one committed suicide...boot still in tact but I think it leaked its lube) and so I'm also conisdering replacing the as many of the rubber suspension bearings as I can while I'm there. Here's a list:

1. Torsion bar bearing (should be easy)
2. Semi-Trailing arm bearing (special tool?)
3. Rubber bearing at back of differential (necessary)
4. Rear axle carrier bearing (below rear jack point)...specail tool?

Classic question...are the special tools absolutely necessary? Can a little patience and finess take their place? I have the MB CD manual but unfortunately the pictures are poor and I cant get a good idea of what everything actually looks like.

Why are you replacing these pieces? If they are solid and tight, you are wasting time and money IMHO.

The rear suspension on my 240D has gone over a half million miles and is still tight. If it aint broke, don't fix it.

I know that some of the bushings/bearings on the front (sway bar bushing for example) are in need of renewal. Basically I am trying to save myself some time and perhaps improve the ride. I havent yet crawled under the car and examined everything I mentioned. I intend to check them out to confirm their state as best I can. One factor that may contribute to ther demise is salt...I know in Texas you dont see that much salt in the winter so your's may look better than mine up here in Maryland.

Basically I just dont what to look back and wish I had taken care of something when I had the chance. If I werent already replacing the axles I wouldnt even consider touching them...especially the subframe mount.
