small crack on dashboard, suggestions?

There is a very small 1/2 inch crack in the dashboard. How do I make sure that it doesn't get any better?

suginami 02-21-2003 08:18 PM

I'm not really sure, but out of curiosity, which car has the crack?

robaincltnc 02-21-2003 09:01 PM

Both actually. The 560 has a couple that have been filled with something. The 420 has the new crack. I definitely want to stop it before it gets bigger.

Any suggestions?

My advise would sound like a dermatologist . . . moisturize and cover.

cracked dash

You could shop around for some of the plastic filler stuff in tubes and fill the cracks so they won't look so bad. Look for similar colour stuff if you can find it, otherwise touch up with colour paint. Your best bet would be to look for the dash protector mat which is usually made of carpet-like material which has velcro or stick on strips underneath. Mine has kept my dash protected for many years and at the same time, use the anti-UV ray aluminium/chrome foldable sheet which sticks on to the inside of your windshield preventing direct sunlight damage and reduces inside heat buildup.

You might want to try drilling a small hole right at the "V" of the crack. The curved radius of the hole absorbs stresses much better than the existing sharp leading edge of the crack and should retard/arrest the lengthening of the crack.

Two thoughts:

1. Go to colorplus.com and look into their vinyl and leather repair items. They say they will supply you will color-matched filler. I haven't used that particular product but have used their leather dye on my seats; it's a dead-on match right out of the can!

2. Go to coverlaymfg.com and buy a dash cover for $87.01 . These are different from the carpet ones described in a post above. The Coverlay units really look like the stock dash and are said to be easy to apply. Again I have not had personal experience but there are many satisfied customers.
