erratic light dimming
I experince erratic light dimming (fluctuation) on my '86 300E after it reaches the operating temperature. Can anybody shed some light on it!

you could possibly have a bad diode in the alternator. It will result in normal function of most of the electrical system but may exhibit some "spikes" that will cause flickering of the lights which is most noticeable at idle and low speeds.
I had a problemwith the lights flickering and a new alternator fixed it.

Thanks. I will take the Alternator out and have it checked. Is it OK to drive the car like this for a while?

If the fluctuation is engine speed related, a weak battery is another possibility - monitoring the voltage across it will be a good indicator. A bad (resistive) fuse could be the culprit if the battery voltage does NOT vary.

New twist to flicker
I thought I was seeing things but mine flickers (and not all of the time) at highway speeds, other times not and I have bright burning lights not dim. Any ideas??

do you have a big powerful subwoofered sound system?

if so, this could be the reason for this.

Hmmm, I dunno....
.....if it's a mega sub woofer set-up. All I know is that the original window sticker (yes, it has survived intact for 12 years) says that it was equiped with a "premium sound system" that does tend to thump and bump when cranked up. The dash unit says "Mercedes-Benz" an AM-FM stereo cassette unit.
