W201 power window won't go up
Howdy,
I've had this problem twice now and haven't been able to figure it out. My problem is that the power window rolls all the way down OK, but won't come back up. I'ts like there is a window stop in the door that keeps the switch from powering the window motor if it is all the way down. I don't feel any resistance when it is down that would indicate the window is stuck in the down position, it just feels the switch is not powering the motor. To fix the problem, I've just worked the window switch back and forth for a while until it finally comes back up. Any suggestions? I don't think it is the switch. Once the problem is cleared it seems to go up and down OK. Thanks, Sholin

It could be an intermittent open in the motor itself, or another VERY common problem in the 190 is that the harness in the door hinge (inside the rubber conduit) can get brittle and break (broken wires inside the conduit)

I would start by cleaning the switches.
Be VERY gentle with the wood in the console. Haasman

I just had the same problem happen to me last week. For a minute i thought I burnt out the motor because I rolled up the window while driving and did not notice that the switch got stuck in the down position.
I took apart the door and noticed that two of the rubber mounts that the motor sits on are in pieces and no longer even hold the motor. The window did itself did not present any resistance, just the motor. I dissasembled everything, lubed up all moving parts and the motor, although still extremely hot, rolled the window up without a problem. I noticed two plastic caps on the motor, sorta like the ones you have on cases of moving parts so you can lube them, but I doubt this is it, but I am wondering what those are for. Even now that the window is all lubed up it still seems to be having a hard time rolling up. I still have to clean the switch to make sure that it stops sticking, and at the same time have to replace my deck wiring completely. xp

Thanks for all your replies. The window is working now, but who knows when it will happen again. I'll probably want to disassemble the switches and clean them.
I've got a little experience with this. On my 108, the window switches were melted due to lugging the window motor. In that case, I did dissassemble them and found the problem. What I had to do there was replace them. On the 108, there are no window relays, just the switches between the battery and the window motor. Is there a window lift relay on the 201? I have the CD-ROM, but could not find alot of info on the wiring of the windows. Sholin

No relays that I know of for the power window switch circuit (checked the Haynes manual electrical schematic).
If you take the switch out and disassemble it, I bet you'll find that the plastic bits which hold the ball bearings in place are cracked causing the intermittent problem. I had the same problem in mine, intermittently would not go up unless I fiddle the switch. It eventually failed altogether. Took it apart and repaired it. Just replace the switch if in doubt how to repair it. CHeers. |

The switch(s) probably do not need to be replaced! Just cleaned.
Search under my name for the procedure. I have done this several times. The design of the window switches allows dirt to collect and prevent contact. They are easy to take apart and clean and put back together. Just watch out because they have tiny little ball bearings in them which will easily fall to the floor. I recommend taking the switches apart over an old bath towel. That way they won't roll away. Haasman

Haasman is spot on about the towel.
I had a bit of fun looking for one ball bearing when it dropped out of the switch, bounced off my shoe and slipped under the car. What could have been a 15 minute repair job took almost an hour!:p Cheers and good luck. |
