I am a new member to MercedesShop.com. I have browsed the technical forum to find answer to my question. So far no luck.
I hope some one could help with my question. Thanks in advance.

I have recently purchased a Mercedes E-Class W210 an E230 model. This car is in amaculate condition with one exception, when stuck in rush hour or driving slowly the engine temperature rises quickly above 80 and upto very close to 120. I normally put the internal fan on with full heater on and open all windows. This brings the termperature down imediatley to 80. Could you please help me to indentify what the problem could be. On my previous Honda, I had a similar problem where a switch which truns on the radiator fan was faulty. After replacing that switch, problem was cured. On mercedes I've been unable to locate any such switches, I don't know there is one on mercedes or not.

If your car is in fact a E230 you must be outside USA. If it is a typo and your car is a E320 you are probably in the USA.
Depending what year your car is and if your car has USA specs, most heating problems are related to a bad thermostat, coolant temperature switch (are your auxiliary engine fans working?) and the engine fan.
When was the last time you change the coolant? Is your AC working fine?
These are things you should look into. The thermostat and the coolant change are the cheapest...

Agree - might also be a bad fan clutch, resulting in the fan not pulling enough air through the radiator at idle and low speeds.

Probably a bad viscous coupling on the main engine fan. This applies to both 3.2 and 2.3 engines (and 2.0 for that matter). That fan should be able to keep the engine cool without the electric fans.

Thanks to Mick J, tkamiya, ctaylor738, J.HIDALGO for your reply. I have read through your replies carefully and have tried to fix the problem.

Mick J: I don't understand what "viscous coupling" is, so I was unable to check for that.

tkamiya: I have also looked for the fuse in both driver side and under the bonnet. Fuse number 25 under the bonnet is for AUX Fan. This fues does not exist in my car as it is only for diesel models acording to the label on the fuse box cover.

ctaylor738: Do you mean the fan clutch as in the fan blade not rotating and being lose. If so I have also check for that and it seems to be fine.

J.HIDALGO: My car is an E230. I live in Scotland - Glasgow. I've not been able to find the coolant switch or thermostat. I have checked the coolant level, which seems to be fine. I also found some other information on the internet about mercedes coolant requirements. I'm not aware, what coolant the previous owner has used. Next thing I'm going to do is to buy new coolant from mercedes and flush out the old one.


I have got some digital pictures of the engine and radiator. but was unable to post them as picture attachment points to http:// path, which I don't know how to use on the forum.

The thermostat is located in a plastic housing somewhere in the piping between the top of the radiator and the engine. This is my guess also.

You may only have electrical fans. However, if you have one big fan connected directly to the engine then you should check the viscous clutch at the center (centre) of the fan. On the 2.3 engine in the W124 mercedes used an electro magnetic big fan which was triggered by a switch at the top of the engine I am not sure if they changed it to the viscous clutch one in the W210 2.3, you need to confirm that.

You need to get yourself a book or a technical manual for your car it will make things a lot easier for you if you are a novice.

'Fan clutch' is the same as the 'viscous coupling.'
