Head lighr wiper reapair / replace
I have a 1987 190e 16v euro which has head light wipers. They seemed to have slipped a gear. When connected they are at odd angles. The motors seem to work as they do turn the blades but they do not start and stop at the right spots. I had the rear panel off at one point and I could not see and markings on the gears equivalent to a top dead center type thing. Also, the back panels seem to be a bit warped (that may have been why the gear slipped).
Does any one know how to fix these? Does anyone know where I can get a set that work or some parts? I will see if I can pull them out (weather permitting) and post some pictures of what I am looking at. I would like them to work. We had an ice storm here last week and the lights are filthy from all the road grime. |

Headlight wiper misaligned
You say BOTH the motors are operating correctly, i.e. that the wipers move through a 90 degree arc, but are not indexed to come to rest at the correct position, with the blades both parallel to the horizontal. If my understanding of your comments is correct, then I suppose you could buy replacemenmt motors, though I dont know why; dealers charge around $120.
Why not just loosen the mounting nut that supports the shaft of the motor and manually turn the motor assembly/wiper arm to the correct rest postion you wish to have. Somewhere in one of the threads in this chat group, about a year or so back, someone explained, with photos, how he had disassembled and repaired an inoperative motor. Of course I read that thread after I had spent the $120 for a new motor--from a dealer. search for this thread: "headlight wiper misaligned" Good luck. I thought I was the only "picure straightener." |

Yes you understood correctly. I think I remember trying to do that way back when but I could not figure out how to find the start position. The other problem, as I recall was the back cover of the motor. On both of the wiper motors, the covers are warped and it seems that the cover hold the gears in place (with out the cover, the gears pop out). I am not sure if someone else has messed with them and forgot to replace a locking pin or not but this is what I am stuck with. I guess at the very least I need back covers that attach securely.
Any ideas anyone? I tried looking for the thread but I am unable to locate it. |

I'm not sure if the adjustment is the same as on the 190's, but on the 300E the rest position of the wipers is adjusted from the front:
1. Swing down the wiper arm, away from the headlight. 2. Where the wiper arm connects to the motor shaft, there should be a small bolt. 3. Use a pair of needle nose pliers to loosen the bolt, adjust the rest position (you may have to swing the wiper arm back and forth to check the final position). 4. Tighten bolt. 5. Swing wiper arm back up until it engages the clip. -anthony |
