Mis-Firing 1992 300SE

My 300se had begun running very rough...since I've just purchased the car my guess was a cap, rotor and set of wires and plugs wouldn't hurt...little did I know that it's $400.00 worth of parts. When it didn't improve the missing didn't get better I was stumped. A close examination of the injection harness proved to be the culprit. The coatings on the wiring harness were disintergrading. I'm in the process replacing the harness...$700+.

Wire harness failures are very common on '92-'95 M104 engines like yours. The insulation goes bad and flakes off the wires.

Do a search under "wiring harness" and you'll get hundreds of hits.

Do the replacement harness fail too? Is there someting that can be done to prevent the harness from failing?

No, the replacement harnesses are fine.

Mercedes got caught up in the green movement, and experiemented with wire insualtion that would be more easily recycleable.

The problem is, it bio-degraded in the car, due to heat.

The insulation was fixed at the end of the 1995 model year.
