The radio of my wifes 89 190E ticks like a bomb. It shows no power and when you hit the on/off switch it starts to click faster. The power antenea which fails to retract is also constantly cycling. I must add that it is the original radio that came with the car.

It is the tape deck. The motor inside is broken. You can upgrade cheaper than getting it repaired.
