1st gear start on w124

Anyone have any suggestions as to why my 91 300E24V won't select 1st gear(when using shifter) when engine is warm?
When cold,it will shift to 1st no problem and also it kicks into 1st via accelarator (kickdown switch) all the time,no problems.
Can't seem to figure out why it won't select 1st with the gearstick.
160000kms and well looked after.

Thanx,Chris.

Do you even own a benz? You are wrong because the car used to shift into 1st before.
w124's shift into 1st when shifter is all the way down, even if only for a moment then select D again, transsmission should still select 1st.

Chris

Makes me wonder if the linkage (or linkage bushings) are worn or out of adjustment. Has the trans ever been out of the car? Is the shifter even a little bit sloppy suggesting worn bushings?

Shifter bushings
Bent rod
flat driveline mounts

124's put the manual valve into 1st when placed in first. (carryover from the 2nd gear start cars)

The trans has never been out of the car to my knowledge and the shifter isnt sloppy at all. All other gears and kickdowns are firm but a little delay when shifting into reverse.

joe p can you plz explain "124's put the manual valve into 1st when placed in first. (carryover from the 2nd gear start cars)"

Haasman,I took it to my trans guy yesterday and he increased the pressure via the bowden cable and this seemed to help alot.
Hardly anymore slipping when car is warm but the same when the car is cold.

When cold,it will shift to 1st no problem.Any suggestions?

Is your fluid fresh and level absolutely right?

The manual valve is in the valvebody, it is the direct connection from the shifter to the tranny. The 1-2 shift command valve in earlier 124's (86 to 90 300e's) had the loading spring on the otherside for second gear starts versus 1 st gear starts. MB moved the spring in 91. This spring is over ridden via fluid pressure when the tranny see' s full bowden cable input, kickdown switch input (on some versions) or manual valve input for 1st gear start. The shifter was not changed when the valvebody was nor was the manual valve. Hence "carryover" from previous models.

How many miles does this unit have, you might simply have a gummy valvebody that needs teardown and cleaning. Or it might be giving you a early warning of impending rebuild needs. Reverse delays are normally linked to either low working pressure or leaking front clutch apply piston seals, which contribute to front clutch wear.

joe p,so what u r saying is that if I moved the spring on the 1-2 command valve to the othr side, would I get 1st gear starts?
thanx.
