awful awful fan noise
When the blower fan is on , in my 190 e there is such a racket coming from the fan it feels like the blower fan is going to blow out of the dashboard. The whole dash vibrates sometimes. My question is, since there is air coming out of the vents at a pretty good force, is it the fan fins hitting the casing, that is causing this horrible noise, and not the motor going bad? If this is true why would the fins be hitting the casing and can this be fixed without purchasing new parts?(e.g. repositioning the fan or something along those lines)
Any hints, or ideas are greatly appreciated!!!  Josh

Electric motors bearings wear out.
I did not see how old your car is. But I have had fan motors start making noise after only 4 years. I would guess your bearings are worn out and the motor is vibrating (That can sound pretty violent.) The other possiblity is that something worked itself into your ductwork and is hitting the squirel cage, but most MB's have a filter on the air intake. I would call a MB dealer and see if they sell bearings for that motor.

Every car I have ever owned with a Bosch fan has required that it be replaced regularly. My '96 will need it this summer. My old '85 190e needed 2 during the time I owned it. On the other hand, no Japanese car I or my brothers have owned have EVER required this part to be replaced (I had a Honda the I bought new with over 500,000km over 10 years that never had a problem with the fan). I have always had my fan running at all times, in all cars. I can't quite uinderstand why the Bosch ones are so short lived.

Instructions please
I have a simular noise, though not as excessive.
I am interested in replacing the blower fan. I have the MB shop manuals, but would appreciate your guidance and suggestions on the replacement of the fan. FastLane has the fan, I just want to feel comfortable changeing things.

Vibration and noise in a fan is a sign of an unbalanced fan blade. There may be something stuck in the blades, or it is (unevenly) dirty, or it is broken. There is no way out of disassembly and inspection.

We just bought our '85- terrible noise from dash/engine area! Brought it to my mechanic "Could you listen to this noise?" He sat in car-smiled hit the "O" switch on dash and said "bearing is on the way out". I've been limping along w/ more serious issues,but if it acts up I just switch to high and then back down again. Maybe order replacement next week.
My brother has over 320k on his '85-his is fine! Also has 15" wheels, cammed windshield wiper-mine is early '85-(door plate lists manufacture in '84! I have 14",and a wiper with a smaller wiper below it-regular style. Any thoughts on that!!?? Thanks-Mel

thanks for the replies everyone. Today the noise was completely gone! And the fan is blowing out a pretty good mass of air. Maybe this is a sign its about to completely break. Its been my experience that when ever something which is broken suddenly fixes itself, it then really breaks soon after. Maybe its just me??
I guess I will wait till it dies to pull everything apart.
