Bad Day For '90 300E

ok...this is truely strange. Today i had a couple of "intresting" problems happen to my newly aquired 300e. First, the car wouldn't shift out of second gear...seemed as if the kickdown swithch was stuck...it wasn't, as in there was no carpet pilled around and it FELT LIKE it worked right. I shut the car off, strated back up and it was fine for the rest of the day. Next problem, i was backing up a drive, uphill, at about 3000rpm and the engine suddenly died. no jerking, no weired sounds, it just shut off, with all idiot lights on. I restarted and all was normal! Strange stuff. any ideas? going to take to my mechanic tomorrow, just wondering if anyone has experianced the same problems with there 300e.

Thanks, Scott

It may sound crazy, but a bad OVP is blamed on all sorts of crazy stuff. Could be bad in this case...

that is sure worth a look...thanks...

What is the part # of the OVP in your car? If the last four digits of the part number are 52 45 replace it!

If it's the 67 45 it's probably OK.

i havent yet looked at the part number, its at Behind the Star here in Raleigh NC....is there some flaw with that ovp? anyway its at the mechanic, do you think the shift problem may be related to the ovp? Anyone have any experiance with a problem like this?

Thanks

Was the engine cold when it wouldn't shift? If it's like my 300 SE it will hold 2nd gear for a minute or two until the engine reaches about 50 degrees C, or if you rev it past 3000 rpm, it will go ahead and shift. This is normal, designed to help pollution and fas warm-up. Maybe when you backed up, the fuel moved away from the pump pick-up and you just ran out of gas for a moment???

Well, at least you took it the right mechanic. I'm sure you're aware that the owner of Behind the Star is a frequent contributor to this site. I always like to see people "supporting the team".

yep...Brian @ Behind the Star is great...and no the car wasn't cold, but its in good hands and ill keep you all posted...thanks

i guess it is possiable that it was a fuel pickup issue, since there was only about a 1/8 of a tank....and backing up...
