I removed the front propeller shaft (due to a bad transfer case) on the 1980 gelandewagen and am driving in 4x2 mode, but now the speedo is only reading about half of what it should. Can these things be related? Is there a fix? Is it a big deal?

The speedo is driven off of the front drive shaft, even in 2 wheel drive. The shaft does spin all of the time. When removed the output is spinning due to friction and reading the wrong MPH. You will have to reinstall the front shaft to get the speedo back online.
