What is the Part number for motor mounts on my 1986 300e? The dealer told me I need to change them, but I was going to look into doing the job myself. That is if it's not to bad of a job. Just how hard is it to do anyway? Any tricks that I might need to know about before I crawl under the car and cuss and swear? (I always cuss and swear when I work on cars... Kind of a ritual I have) The dealer wants about 200 big bucks to do it. Should I let him?

At repair center the labor should be 1-1.5hrs X flat rate. If you try this job be careful w/jacking engine as radiator neck is fragile. The part # is 201-240-43-17, try PartsShop for OE quality only!! Have seen aftermarket units that are JUNK.

By the way my 1973 R75/5 has the longer swing arm & only 53K original miles.

This brings up a question I've had for some time:

What do the motor mounts consist of? As they "wear out" I would think rubber or some other kind of perishable material. However, I've heard of fluid-filled ones, etc. I drive a 190 2.6 and I've read in this forum that motor mounts for the 201 are *notorious* in their failure. What? Why?

Clueless

They fail at about 100K or so. They are heard of so much because the cars are now at or beyond 100k. They are fluid filled rubber and do wear out.

M.B. Doc,
53k Original miles!?!?!?! What are you doing typing on a computer? Get out and RIDE!

Okay, I'm going to disconnect the top radiator hose from the engine, jack up the engine and replace the mounts one by one. Anything to save a buck or two. Especially since the dealer is 40 miles from my house.

Wish me luck.

Best of luck!! Removing the allen bolt(always very tight) can be FUN.

Riding more than 1500mi a year is tough, only fall & spring presents the right conditions & with the race car time is a scarce item.
