What kind of gas mileage are you getting (300E)?
My 1991 300E is getting about 11mpg in city driving. After reading some posts on this topic, it sounds like it could be O2 sensor, plugs, wires, or maybe even something else. Anyway, my mechanic is checking it out tomorrow - I'll post his findings.
Also, what kind of mileage are you getting with your 300E's? What should I expect to get once things get sorted out? Thanks Jon

AHHH!! 11mpg, i remember those days when my 300E ate that much gas, I semi got it fixed. I guess it's about 18city now. One of the BIGGEST contributers to it was that there was a vacuum leak. Really I would check that first, my leak was under my exhaust manifold, some tube, don't recall off hand. Thats really your best bet. If it's not that, i'd go with just a normal tune up to get everything running correctly. It really does sound like a vacuum leak tho, but if the car hasn't been tuned up for awhile, i'd just spend a weekend doing all that.
Good Luck |

A catastrophic drop in gas mileage like you are describing is almost always due to a bad O2 sensor.

I get around 15 mpg in town, going up and down hills. What is the expected in town/hwgy mileage?

My 1988 300E is getting about 19 MPG doing mostly city driving.

The mpg of the 300E's varies slightly with the year of the car as the 300E's gained more and more weight throught the years, but generally speaking, 17 mpg city / 12 mpg hwy is what they claim. The "300E" with the best mileage is the '93 300E at 18 mpg city / 23 mpg hwy, but then again, '93 300E's are really E320's w/o the badge.

Hi,
10 Mpg City. 20 Hwy. What vacuum line is under the exhaust manifold? I posted a reply on another thread about listing all the vacuum hoses that cause poor gas milage, poor idle and/or have the possibility of leaving you stranded if they fail: Idle Control Valve hoses (Critical) Breather hoses (not critical though contribute to poor idle.) Manifold to valve cover. (Mostly idle.) Any others? chicago124 |

Mileage better!
Sorry for the delay. Good news, though. My mechanic (Mr. MB Motors in Tarzana, CA) checked out my car by hooking up a handheld monitor to the car's CPU. After a few minutes he declared the car was running rich and proceeded to use what looked like a very long screw driver (or allen wrench) and inserted it into a hole in the center of the air filter box. A few adjustments, a little more monitoring and he said "that should do it".
On my last fill-up, I recorded 310 miles (mixed and highway) on about 15.3 gallons. Much better than what I was getting! Thanks for the tip on the vacuum hose. Even though my mileage is better, I'll have him check it out next time just in case. Jon

Over 17232 miles driven in 2002, my 260E averaged 26.7mpg.
(I'd say abour 60% highway, 40% city driving) JackD |

The 91 300E gets 19 ~ 22 MPG in combined city and highway driving. Typically on the highway the speed is around 75MPH.
Tank range is ALWAYS above 300 miles per, best was 380+. The car is stock except of a K&N air filter and removal of the resistor. Keep us posted, Haasman

I just drove from NC to NY and back. On a full tank I got 350 miles before the reserve light came on. I believe I would have gotten more if it wasn't because of the traffic around Washington.

Haasman, have you noticed much performance/other improvement after installing the K&N air filter? |

If these are Canadian gallons it would translate to 22.9 miles per US gallon. Reno

Yes a bit of throttle response increase, seems to accelerate a bit better and I noticed a slight increase in MPGs. I forgot to mention I removed the resistor per: Performance Increase ~resistor Keep us posted, Haasman
