Due to the UV rays over many years the rear deck of my 1986 300E has faded from burgundy to various shades of gray-violet. The car is otherwise immaculate, so it'd be nice to bring the rear deck up to standard. At approximately $1,000 Cdn for a new shelf and first-aid cover, replacement is out of the question.

I would appreciate hearing of anyone's experience with re-dyeing or recovering the rear shelf/cover, particularly as a DIY project.

Thanks in advance,
Barrie

We have done this with some generic black materiel with great results. We just glued it on top of the old stuff.

As you know, everything fits quite snugly without adding another layer. Assuming you used a cover of similar thickness as the original, did you need to at least trim-off the edges of the original to retain an appropriate thickness? (For example, to fit the slots on the speaker covers.) Thanks for your reply.
