hey guys jsut found a 97 theft recovery s600 with amg pkg. (amg wheels and slight bodywork) the car is perfect except for the sound system which was very carefully taekn out ( i dont know why they just didnt rip it out ) and missing seats, along with slight water damage.. rear carpeting is only thing affected.. all electrical and mechanically perfect and guaranteed for 1yr 20k miles by the salvager.. the car is going for $55k is it worth it??? car has 12k miles.. anything woudl be appreciated... I have been looking for a descent w140 for a while now, can anyone point me in the right direction???

Is the car salvaged for sure?? I have seen couple S600 Coupes, with less then average mileage, totally clean record, and sell for about $55K, too....

If you have the parts to put into the car, it might be worth it...But I would move on if I were you....

Just my thoughts..

Trade-in value for a sedan in good condition is $70k; a coupe is at $76k. Both of these values assume a stereo is installed and all parts are present and accounted for. I guess to answer your question, the only way to determine if it's worth it is
- How much for replacement seats?
- Why replace the stereo? Put a far superior aftermarket one for around $1-1.5k.
- Carpet cost?
- Labor for all of this?

Assuming the seats are available on the used market at a reasonable price (and probably the OE stereo too), then this car sounds like a deal...big bucks, but a reasonable deal. If it's warranteed, then I'd say go for it. Just be prepared for V12-sized maintenance costs, as I've heard they're scary.

Best of luck!

i just got word from the dealer that the car is not salvaged but just atheft recovery.. they are willing to get the interior out of another almost "identical" (sorry) s600 for a extra grand cash on the side for him... and if i want it installed another grand,,, as for the sound system he says to go after market also... I am going to see the car again tomorrow...

anything else to look for???

The interior would be from an "almost 600"?? The 600 had quite a few extra-special bits in the interior, so be sure that none of the potential replacement parts diminishes the value of the car.

Otherwise, on such a low-mi car nothing should be inoperable. Be sure to check the door-close assists, though.

Right, Michael got the point. S600 has full-leather interior, and with Nappa 2-tone seats. Also, S600 has power operat rear seats. Another "identical" seat may not work with power function.....

But, if you can get it "restore" back to the way it used to be, and at $60K, I think it's well worth......

But keep 2 banks of in-line-six is still too much for a 20-year-old-kid like myself....LOL....
