Check Engine Light 1994 E320
I did a 75000 mile service on my 1994 E320 last weekend.
- transmission service - oil filter and change - fuel filter - air filter - changed brake fluid and front pads that was on Saturday, on Monday my check engine light came on. I checked the fuel door and it was locked, so I fixed the problem and turned the check engine light off by disconnecting the battery. Yesterday the light came back on and the fuel door is fine. The light conttinues to stay on even after the car is turned off. Any idea's? I just bought the car w\ 73000 miles on it. The car seems to run great even w\ the light on. Thank you for any help. |
CE lamp means an emmissions fault has been detected, but lucky for you, that car has owner access to codes under the hood .
Black box w/lid, foward of battery. There is a sw/LED that , when pressed , will Flash back a code [number of flashes]. There are a ton of articles in the archieves on the exact procedure.... Once you have the code info, post it and someone will tell you which fault has been detected and possible remedies... PS Are you also saying the CE is ON even with the Key in the OFF position ????? |
That is correct, the first time it came on it turned off with the key in the off position. I just went out this morning and it has been on all night. I will see if I can get the codes now. Thank you for the help.

I pressed the button in the black box in front of the battery and the light does not flash at all? Does this mean anything?

I would check for power at teminal 16 at the box with a test lamp. |
sfeyer, what happened to the "check engine light" problem? I'm having the same thing at the moment.
|
It just went out!
Edge,
It is funny that you reply on the right now. I was just telling a friend that the CEL stopped coming on about two days ago. I am not sure why? I think the system will turn the light off after a certain number of checks on the emmision system. I ignored the light for about two months. The car was always running well. I wish I could be more help. Let me know how it turns out. Steve |
Is the engine wiring harness original? The engine wiring on these cars (93-95) were made from the dreaded experimental insulation that degrades. They've been known to cause these electrical gremlins.

Kestas,
I am not sure if the harness is original or not. How can you tell? Did you have to replace yours? If so How Much $ and How long did it take? Steve |
See if you can peel back the protective sheath on some of the wiring to take a look at the insulation. It should then be obvious. If the insulation is cracked and flaking and you see bare copper wire, then I recommend changing the wiring harness with a replacement. You can get one for $650 from PartsShop at the top of this page. Mine was more expensive since it's a later production model.
