What would be the effect of worn.....

valve stem seals and guides on a compression test?
I am scheduling these repairs as soon as uncle Sam's return comes in. But I want to do a compression test on my own (25.00 in Sears for a compression tester). And before I go to the mechanic, I want to make sure about the condition of the engine.
Given the age and mileage (200K+ ?) of the vehicle what values should I look for? (assuming worn seals and/or guides)
It uses about 1 quart every 500 miles.

A compression test will tell you if you need a valve job - i.e. the valves are not seating properly, or if the rings are bad. Since the valves are closed in the compression stroke, you will get no information about the guides or seals. Indirectly, if compression tests good, you can be pretty sure the burning oil is mostly draining down the valve stems.
