you have many choices ranging from synthetic or non-synthetic. Everyone seems to have a brand that they've had good luck with and they stick with it. Seeing as how you asked though I will at least throw in 2 different brands that I've used and had excellent luck with, they are Mobil 1 ATF and Amsoil ATF. Both are synthetic and both provide nice smooth shifts.
If you don't want to pay the price of synthetics than any good Dexron II/III is what is recommended. I've attached a data sheet on ATF's that I did about 6 months ago for your reference. It may help you in deciding what's right for you!! ok, that looks real confusing. I copied and pasted an excel sheet. Looks like it went a little haywire. If you want I can send it to you in e-mail if you can't make sense out of what's on here.

I was at the Benz dealer inquiring about ATF... He asked what car I had and I told him, and he said for my older Benz (I guess he means "traditional" 4 speeds) and he said just plain Dexron III. He kinda leaned over the counter a little bit and told me, "Just go down the street to O'Reilly's and get their brand for $1.19/qt....that's where we get ours!" So the Benz dealer themselves use generic brand Dexron III! I suppose it wouldn't hurt to use something more exotic, but you probably won't see any difference and probably just end up wasting your money. Just my humble opinion

Plain Dexron III works in older Benz trannies, except the newer ones found in late 1990s cars. My local dealer uses Pennzoil fluid, i use Chevron.
